Experts at Rutgers University claim that “Work-life balance has become a top priority to many workers entering or moving up the career ladder in today’s workforce. This trend is evident in a broad range of careers and industries.” One reason for this is the growing number of millennials entering the workforce. With an increasing number of millennials dominating office environments, employers are trying harder to appeal to this majority by emphasizing a healthy balance between work and personal life. However, millennials tend to define work-life balance differently from previous generations, owing to the continuous evolution in regards to the definition of the term. So what exactly does work-life balance consist of today? That’s a question with no fixed answer as, ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all definition of work-life balance. Contrary to popular belief, work-life balance is not a 50/50 split between one’s professional and personal life. In fact, work-life balance can differ from person to person and depends greatly on one’s priorities at a given time. For instance, a married person with kids will have a very different definition of work-life balance from that of a recent graduate with student debt. Why is Work-life Balance Important? Having a proper work-life balance has many advantages. Most significantly, maintaining a healthy work-life balance prevents employee burnout and reduces chronic stress. Alan Kohll, a Forbes contributor for corporate wellness, writes that “Chronic stress is one of the most common health issues in the workplace. It can lead to physical consequences such as hypertension, digestive troubles, chronic aches and pains and heart problems.” Eventually, too much stress over extended periods of time can lead to employee burnout, affecting both the company and employee very negatively. Employee burnout has severe psychological ramifications, and results in a major drop in employee productivity and performance. Promoting a well-balanced life can reduce the probability of burnout significantly. While the most obvious benefit of work-life balance is fewer health problems in employees, it also aids in boosting employee engagement. Additionally, companies that promote work-life balance tend to attract and retain top talent as the general employee satisfaction level is much higher. There are many telltale signs that indicate poor work-life balance amongst employees no matter the industry. These include overeating or barely eating, experiencing lack of sleep, having nightmares about work, a feeling of depression, constant irritability and fatigue, getting sick often, drinking excessive coffee, and refusing to take a break at work. Should employers or employees notice any of these signs recurring in fellow employees, they should encourage the affected employee to take action and actively work towards a better work-life balance before it is too late. How to Achieve Better Work-Life Balance One of the best ways for employers to promote work-life balance is to allow for a flexible work environment. Doing so is proven to satisfy the needs of most employees, no matter which generation of workers they belong to. Flexible work environments that encourage remote working have been shown not only to boost productivity but also reduce stress levels. The ability to work from anywhere enables employees to personalize their schedules and save ample time that would have otherwise been spent in long commutes. This translates into extra time to invest in self-care and wellness activities. Simultaneously, employers must realize that work-life balance goes beyond simply the hours of work. Creating a happy, accepting and safe work environment for employees should be a top priority for employers. An overall positive work experience allows employees to feel like their place of work is like their second home, and creates a healthy mindset. Companies can improve workplace culture by providing competitive compensation, prioritizing comfortable working conditions and providing opportunities for professional development. Alongside employers, there are many actions employees can take to achieve a better work-life balance. One suggestion is to organize the week in advance. Coming home after a busy day at work to a long list of chores with no idea where to start is a major cause of stress for a lot of employees. As aptly stated in this article, “With a job, family, and housework to balance, sometimes it seems impossible to indulge in hobbies or even just relax.” Taking some time out at the start of every week to map out weekly goals and create to-do lists can help relieve that foreboding feeling of stress and provide a sense of direction through the week. Guitar teacher  Edward B.  shares the benefits and drawbacks he has learned from teaching live online lessons Live online guitar lessons are filling a much-needed gap in society’s need for lessons, especially for students in rural areas who don’t have access to music teachers, and busy students who have trouble fitting lessons into their schedules. I’ve given guitar lessons quite successfully via Skype and Google Hangouts, and have found this method of teaching benefits students in the following ways: Quality Teachers I believe it is better to have Skype lessons with an excellent teacher than it is to have in-person lessons with a mediocre teacher. Searching for a guitar teacher online gives you even more options to choose from since youre not restricted to your small local region. No Traveling You don’t have to fight traffic to get to your guitar teacher’s studio. Also, when a student is five or ten minutes late, I give them a courtesy call in case they forgot. But if they live 15 minutes away and they have a 30 minute lesson, it’s hardly worth it for them to come late. Taking lessons online means no missed lessons due to forgetfulness since the student and teacher can connect 30 seconds after the courtesy call. Convenient Scheduling There are more options for choosing the best day and time for the lesson when you look at all the teachers available online versus just the teachers in your local area. Convenience of Recording Lessons While students always have the option to record their face-to-face lessons, that almost never happens (at least, in the history of my teaching). But you can easily record Skype and Google+ lessons for review at a later time with software like Evaer and Super Tin Tin, or for audio only: Pamela MP3 Skype, or RecorderVodBurner. Immediate Practicing While face-to-face students must drive home before practicing what they learned, online students can practice immediately after the lesson when ideas are fresh. The first practice session will always be of higher quality when it is done immediately after the lesson than if it is done the next day, and the first practice session is the most important session of the entire week. Warming Up You can warm up right before your lesson, only stopping seconds before the lesson begins. This lets you show off your best playing to your teacher each week instead of starting rusty. Increased Student Performance Students actually spend more time performing during distance lessons than in face-to-face lessons. Don’t Have To Be In The Same Room You won’t need to cancel lessons because you had the flu two days before, because during online lessons you can’t pass illness on to your teacher. Transferring Instructional Music Files I can simply email mp3 audios and screenshare or email music documents. Of course there are also a few drawbacks to choosing online guitar lessons No Physical Touch Sometimes the most efficient way to achieve technical results with a student is to physically manipulate their wrists, fingers, elbows, etc. while their hands are on the strings. Your online guitar teacher wont be able to give you physical adjustments if needed.  Dependent Upon Internet Connection The student and teacher must both have a fast Internet connection, and even if they do, sometimes there are days when Internet backbones are lagging, ISPs are having trouble, etc., although that’s a rare occurrence. Glitches still happen sometimes with Skype and Google Hangouts but seem to be happening less as the technology develops.  Sound Quality Even with a fast Internet connection, sound quality does not resemble the quality of a CD or the quality of hearing the student in person. Having said that, I feel that I’m still able to judge tone quality acceptably well. Looking From a Different Angle Sometimes (but not very often), I’ll walk to the other side of the student in order to see what their hands look like from the other side, in cases where I have to look specifically at the left hand position. Since I can’t do that in an online guitar lesson, students have to reposition their webcams. Distractions Students may be more distracted at home by noises made by siblings, animals, neighbors, etc, than they would be at a teachers studio. Instructor Spotlight Laisa Mathissen Instructor Spotlight: Laisa Mathissen Laisa Mathissen, Instructor of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Fairfield â€" Downtown 4,826 miles. That’s the distance between Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Westport, Conn. It’s also the distance travelled in Laisa Mathissen’s journey with Kumon.  Laisa was 9-years-old, living in Rio de Janeiro,  when her parents enrolled her in Kumon. She remained enrolled for six years and credits the discipline, time management, and organization skills she possesses today to those years spent as a Kumon Student. Laisa’s academic studies eventually led her to London where she studied economics. After briefly working in the finance industry, Laisa and her husband moved to Connecticut in 2010. Around the same time, Kumon had a unique way of re-entering her life. “My stepchildren needed a little extra help with math,” said Laisa. “I recalled the success that I had with Kumon as a child and told my husband that we should enroll them. Shortly after enrolling, I realized that it could be a good job opportunity for me as well and asked the Instructor if she needed help.” Laisa worked at the Kumon Center for about a year-and-a-half as a center assistant. Because of her background in finance, she primarily worked with the higher-level math students. She eventually started working with newly enrolled students and was exposed to many of the business aspects of running a Kumon Franchise. “After about a year or so, I realized that Kumon didn’t just have to be a job for me. I could turn Kumon into a career,” said Laisa. “After experiencing Kumon as a student and as a parent, I knew that the method worked, but then seeing how the center was run as an employee, I was immediately drawn to the idea of becoming a small business owner.” Laisa saw the potential with Kumon and wanted to give other children the same opportunities she had.    For the past eight years, she has had two unique advantages that have helped her daily. Firstly, she was a Kumon Student, so she knows what they are going through every step of the way. She has experienced their joys, successes, failures and fears. Second, she is a Kumon Parent herself. “My two older children were enrolled in Kumon, but now my youngest, six and four years old, are also enrolled,” said Laisa. “Parents see that I’m not just passionate about what I do, but that I also believe in the product enough to have my own children enrolled in the program. That helps me build a relationship with my parents because I can give him tips not just as an Instructor, but also as a parent.” What is it about being an Instructor you enjoy the most?   As an Instructor, I like that I am in my student’s academic career for the long-run. I want my students to know that we are on this journey for a long time, that way they can trust me. Seeing them go from below grade level, to grade level or beyond is so satisfying. I enjoy being able to offer this growth opportunity for my students. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as a Kumon Instructor? No two children are alike. I already knew this in theory, having four children of my own. When you are working with an early learner, you must be flexible. The key to success is being flexible to adapt to a child’s learning condition. Once I truly grasped this, I could see each of my students in a different light, and their strengths were more evident. Can you describe an instruction moment where you made an impact on a student?   Luckily, there are many moments I can recall. Most recently, we had a second grade math student who came to us because he was really struggling in school. His parents weren’t confident when I gave him a low starting point, but they luckily took a leap of faith with me. I was so elated when I heard he recently won a math competition in his class. This was a very special moment in this child’s life. It was the moment he realized he can do anything if he sets his mind to it. Moving forward, he can apply this method to virtually anything in his life, whether it’s cooking, learning a musical instrument, or learning a trade. What do you like to do in your spare time?   In my spare time, I really try to invest in my health. Exercise is a priority and it makes it even better when I can do it with my friends or family. I also really enjoy playing with my daughters and love to spend as much time with them as possible. What is a fun fact about you that people may not know?   Every Friday, I play in a soccer league and take Bikram yoga (hot yoga) classes. When I’m not lost in the next good read from my book club, I love binge-watching shows on Netflix with my husband, especially political dramas.
